Concerning your ideas on the Roche study questions: the entertainment industry was there long before, but yes, promotion (or better advertising as the industry here) emerged from those fairs. And also the exhibitionary complex featuring museums, galleries, travelling shows etc. emerged at world's fairs.

What the "combining elements" are concerned: you identified one of them. Also, and in connection with Roche, the emotion associated with one fair was pre-planned as well. If a fair is planned as splendid and grand event, people will memorize not only the fair, but also the managers, place, country etc. These emotions were carefully designed by compiling fair guide books: many people followed the recommended route in the guide books and thus tha fair was designed accordingly, orchestrating the grandeur of companies, buildings, events and above all countries in a distinctive sequence!
